Google Calling For More Efficient Power Supplies?

Here is a bit of an odd one for you. Google, of all companies, is calling for a more efficient power supply standard. Don’t get me wrong, I like the idea, I guess I just didn’t expect it to be a Google backed initiative. Then again, they have a server farm that is probably bigger than NASA’s, why shouldn’t it be them talking about efficient PSUs.

The Google plan calls for a shift from multivoltage power supplies to a single 12-volt standard. Although voltage conversion would still take place on the PC motherboard, the simpler design of the new power supply would make it easier to achieve higher.
