Kingwin Lazer Gold 1000W Power Supply Review

1000 watts of Gold Rated 80 Plus+ power is not something that you find in the PSU market every day, but with the new GPUs swallowing mass amounts of power, the PSU guys are going to have to step up with better units. Kingwin does exactly that with its new "Lazer" unit, the LZG-1000.

Introduction

Today we have the opportunity to have a look at a power supply being branded by KWI Technology Inc., or better known to most readers as Kingwin. Kingwin has been in business since 1992 manufacturing mobile racks and general storage solutions. Today though we find Kingwin branding, and in some product categories developing a number of different components and peripherals including cases, CPU coolers, liquid cooling systems, and power supplies in addition to their core business markets. Today, we will be looking at one of Kingwin’s new power supply offerings from the Lazer series (the LZG-1000) which is developed in conjunction with SuperFlower.

SuperFlower Computer Inc is a name that may not be familiar to most of our US readers, but as a company SuperFlower has been designing and producing power supplies, and chassis, since 1991. In 2006, they expanded with the establishment of a new subsidiary factory, Jing Hua Co., Ltd, now handling their increased power supply production. While SuperFlower has not been a high profile OEM in the US, some of their products can be found branded by TTGI, MadDog Media, Kingwin, and occasionally SuperFlower themselves. One of the distinguishing points spearheaded by SuperFlower units was the inclusion of some of the first 140mm fans, and while normally not found as the OEM behind ultra high end brands SuperFlower has typically made good budget oriented offerings.

A Lazer Light Show?

The Kingwin Lazer Gold Series 1000W power supply is the fourth power supply, and second from the Lazer line, that we have seen from Kingwin to date. In previous outings we have seen some good products, and some award winning products. So with this unit representing what on the surface appears to be just an evolutionary step from previous good products, we have high hopes today that this will be another good outing. However, we have to get below the surface a bit to see if we are indeed dealing with, an evolutionary step, a revolutionary step, or a step down the wrong road. First, let's see what Kingwin has to say about this unit:

Brand new Lazer Gold Series, 80 Plus Gold certified, has all the power and the connection you need for today’s high end components. LZG-1000 is THE Power Supply you need in order to run today’s high-performance PC. LZG-1000 is also compatible with Core i5 or i7 processor.

Let’s move on now so we can see what we can expect when a user purchases the Kingwin LZG-1000 supply in retail in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
