Tuniq Ripper 1000W Power Supply

While Tuniq is not a very well known name in the PSU market, many of you modders out there are very aware of Tuniq's sister company, Sunbeamtech. Tuniq is a subsidiary and looking to move into the very lucrative market space of high power computer power supplies. So, do the Tuniq have what it takes at 1000 watts?

Overview

The first thing we are going to look at with the Tuniq Ripper 1000W is its packaging, accessories, and documentation. While normally none of these items is a make or break item for a power supply the packaging quite often contains a lot of information about the product we are purchasing. The inclusion of an owner’s manual that provides actual information about our product is also of great help. Accessories are almost unnecessary with a power supply as the unit is self contained, unless it is modular, but there cases where a manufacturer can include useful accessories to make installation, routing and use more efficient.

The Tuniq Ripper 1000W packaging is your basic black with white text in very large type. The packaging has the power labels for all members of the Ripper family, connector counts for all members of the ripper family, included items list, a few marketing points, 80Plus Bronze seal, and an SLI seal. A quick check of the 80Plus website finds the unit 80Plus certified but not for the advertised Bronze level, rather it is certified just for Climate Savers 1 which is 80%-80%-80%. Indeed, none of the units in the Ripper line are even currently listed as 80Plus bronze certified, so I doubt the sticker is referring to another unit in this line. After a quick check of the SLIZone website we find no entry’s at the time of writing for the Tuniq Ripper 1000W or any other Tuniq product. Also, Sirfa has no units listed on the SLIZone website either which is interesting. Lastly, the packaging lists a 3 year warranty for this unit, which is certainly shorter than what we would like to see from an enthusiast product, but the details of this warranty were nowhere to be found on the Tuniq website or in the manual.

The power table for the Tuniq Ripper 1000W shows that the Ripper has 75A or ~90% of its output capacity available for the 12v rails. The minor rails however, also have a healthy 200w that is available to them while respecting the total DC output capacity. These outputs are paired with a total of 6 PCI Express connectors (three 6-pin and three modified 8-pin) along with a total of twelve Molex and SATA connectors for peripherals and drives. Lastly, for those users who are looking to run dual CPU boards there are EPS and P4/AUX connectors available. Overall, the connectors seem well matched to the DC output capacity and are on par with the needs for most enthusiasts and other 1000 watt units on the market.

Once we open the Tuniq Ripper 1000W we find the usual assortment of items including the power supply, the power cable, mounting screws, modular adapters, cable ties, and the user manual. The user manual that comes with the Tuniq Ripper 1000W clocks in at 11 pages and in English only. Included in the manual are the power table, the connector count and diagram, fan speed and noise graphs, and general protection circuitry information. Overall, the manual is OK but it doesn’t include the 12v rail breakdown or the warranty information which would be very helpful.
