Tuniq Ripper 1000W Power Supply

While Tuniq is not a very well known name in the PSU market, many of you modders out there are very aware of Tuniq's sister company, Sunbeamtech. Tuniq is a subsidiary and looking to move into the very lucrative market space of high power computer power supplies. So, do the Tuniq have what it takes at 1000 watts?

Introduction

Today we have the opportunity to review our first product from Sunbeamtech’s Tuniq division. Sunbeamtech (and Tuniq) is a newer face in the DIY market having been established in 2000 and generally their product lines have focused on modding accessories. Over the last 8 years they have cultivated a range of product lines including chassis, CCFL’s, fan controllers, and power supplies. The power supplies sold by Sunbeamtech can be found in various model lines under the Sunbeamtech branding or the Tuniq subsidiary branding. Today we are looking at a new power supply from Tuniq that is the middle product in their new Ripper series, the Ripper 1000w (PSU-RIP1000). For this unit Tuniq/Sunbeamtech has paired up with Sirfa.

Sirfa Electronics Co., Ltd. is a name that is not that familiar to most users but they have been around since 1996 when Sirtec established Sirfa as a factory in the Sirtec group on mainland China. Recently, June 2008, Sirtec sold off their interest in Sirfa making the company independent of the Sirtec brand. As such, while we have not seen any Sirfa produced power supplies under the Sirfa brand, some of the Sirtec units of the past were most likely produced at the Sirfa facility. That makes today’s Sirfa produced unit the first that we have seen under this label and we look forward to seeing what there is to be had from this newly independent company.

Tuniq the Ripper?

The Tuniq Ripper 1000W is the first Tuniq branded power supply we have seen to date and it comes into a product segment that virtually every major (and minor) player has entered a product into over the last 24 months or so. This makes for some competition that one could call "cut throat" as many companies use the 1000 watt power level to introduce their flagship product or product line. As such, we have to wonder with the Tuniq Ripper being a later entrant; will it really be the Ripper or will it fall upon its own knife?

The Tuniq webpage and marketing is certainly brief and cuts right to the point so let's do the same and move on to see what we have to look forward to when we purchase the Tuniq Ripper 1000W in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
