FarCry 2 DX9 vs. DX10 Image Quality

The trilogy is complete; our in-depth coverage of FarCry 2 is concluded with this look at DX9 versus DX10 image quality. Is there a noticeable difference between DX9 and DX10 in FarCry 2? Introduction

Finalizing this trilogy of an in-depth look into FarCry 2’s gameplay performance and image quality we culminate our analysis with this look at image quality. Our first evaluation focused on real-world gameplay experiences on a range of video cards in FarCry 2. The conclusion in that evaluation was that this game plays well, very well and we were able to maximize in-game settings. Our second evaluation showed us why, the fact that DX10 performed much better than DX9 providing noticeably faster framerates in FarCry 2. This evaluation will now show you what those image quality differences look like between DX9 and DX10. We will answer at the end of this evaluation for you if you should be running in DX9 or DX10 for this game and what the differences are in image quality.

Since all in-game IQ settings are mirrored between DX9 and DX10, we can do direct comparisons at the highest in-game settings.

Here is the in-game menu with DX10 selected; you will see that both match up exactly. For this evaluation we have used a GeForce GTX 280 and AMD Radeon HD 4870 1GB for the image quality tests. Right up front we will tell you we found NO image quality differences between the AMD GPU and the NVIDIA GPU in FarCry 2 using the latest drivers. Therefore we aren’t even going to show this comparison because there is nothing to show! This evaluation will focus on DX9 versus DX10 image quality and features.
