Intel Unveils 16 New Processors
Intel Unveils 16 New Processors and these are built using 45nm process! To be for sale later this year? Nope, 9 of the 16 are slated for availability this month with the rest of the field showing up in Q1'08.
While it seems only yesterday that 65nm process got to the enthusiast, Intel is today telling us about very affordable 45nm processors that are ready to come to market.
These are of course not the first 45nm processors we have heard about. Since back in January of 2007 Intel has been talking this up and rightly so. Late in 2007 Intel introduced and delivered 45nm Penryn processors, albeit only at the high end with the QX9650 and later the QX9770, although the QX9770 was soft launched with noted January availability but is not mentioned today.
The new “E8XXX” dual core Intel Core 2 Duo processors will range from 2.66GHz to 3.16GHz stock speeds all using a 1333MHz processor bus and Intel is stating that these dual core processors will be available this month. On the quad core side of things, we will see 3 new “Q9XX” Intel Core 2 Quad processors ranging from 2.50GHz to 2.83GHz with availability stated as Q1’08. Mobile fans will find 5 new dual core Intel mobile processors for their notebooks while desktop enthusiasts will be served up 4 new dual core processors and 3 new quad core processors. All the specifics can be seen on this slide.
All of these processors will offer SSE4 instructions which Intel is now referring to as “Intel HD Boost.” While Intel claims “up to 70% higher performance,” the applications that truly take advantage of SSE4 instructions currently are far and few between, but surely more applications will be coming to market that will make SSE4 that much more attractive.
Two of the Intel Core 2 Quad processors will pack in 12MB of shared L2 case which should give these quad core processors an even further leading IPC compared to its equally clocked competition from AMD.
Obviously, the enthusiast wants to know more about power usage and overclocking that these new 45nm Intel Core 2 processors hold and of course we can’t wait to get our hands on some.
Many of us are looking forward to Intel’s Menlow low power processor platform due later in Q1’08. For those of us looking for small, cool, and quiet, this may be it.
While all of this is certainly very exciting for the enthusiast, we still suggest looking to some 800MHz or 1066MHz bus parts that will allow you a lot of FSB overclocking headroom. Check out the Intel section of the HardForum for more information and if you have missed our "Official Core 2 Overclocking Database" it is surely something you will want to see if you are looking for a new overclocking project.
