GeForce 8800 GT Mega Heatsink Roundup

Many of you know that NVIDIA's 8800 GT can run rather hot under load. Our GTs ran at over 90C. That spells disaster in a hot case. Let HardOCP show you the way to cool down that white hot GT while not breaking the bank and getting great performance.

REVOLTEC Graphic Freezer Pro

Revoltec is a company you may not be familiar with. They make high quality mice, keyboard, mouse pads, etc. The Graphic Freezer Pro is the only VGA cooler the company makes that is designed for more recent video cards like NVIDIA’s 7-series. The only other coolers are designed for the GeForce Ti 4 and older cards. On paper the Graphic Freezer Pro has a lot going for it. It has a copper base with large aluminum fins and a couple of heat pipes to help keep everything cool. Let's see if this cooler can perform out in the wild.

Package & Specs

The Revoltec cooler is the only one in the roundup today that comes in a sealed blister pack. The level of protection offered by this method is excellent though at the expense of using a hacksaw to open it up.

The fan that comes with the cooler has no method for adjusting its fan speed. This limits the level of performance that can be achieved with this cooler as you're stuck with whatever fan speed you're given. Since this cooler is listed as supporting the 7900GTX, I can only assume it won't let the card go into nuclear meltdown mode. Aren't you glad we are the ones testing this out instead of you?

Contents & Flatness

This cooler comes with the most peculiar looking ram sinks I've ever seen. Now while the majority of today's coolers don't “officially” support the 8800GT they can all be mounted thanks to the same hole placement as the 7900 series of video cards. Since this cooler offers support for the 7900 series video cards it is even more odd to find only these four over sized ram sinks in the package. You would be left with four uncovered chips unless you try to angle them to partially cover two chips at once. Needless to say this is not a great start for this cooler.

The base of the Graphic Freezer pro is generally flat. No waves were noticeable though the ripples throughout the cooler were fairly prominent. A good lapping job would increase this cooler's performance.

Installation & Contact

Installing the card was easy enough since there are only two screws that need to be tightened. What's that you say? The 7900 series that's listed on the compatibility list uses a four-hole mounting system? Yes, it does. Well this cooler thinks that's two too many and includes only two mounting points. The ram sinks mentioned earlier also do not fit under the heat pipes of the cooler and testing was only able to continue with ram sinks from a different cooler.

Looking at the contact patch would seem to suggest that Revoltec dodged a bullet. Even with half the mounting points recommended, the Graphic Freezer Pro was able to provide excellent contact with the core. The rest is up to the heat sink.
