Enermax Galaxy DXX Series PSU

Enermax is one of the better known names in the power supply industry, but does their Enermax Galaxy DXX have what it takes to pass muster? Built to a different specification for dual 300 watt video cards??? I don't think you can buy those....yet.

Introduction

Enermax Technology Corporation is a company that is well known in the world of power supplies and general computing alike. Founded in 1990 Enermax has made a name for themselves by providing solid performing power supplies, among other computer components and accessories. Enermax's current lines of power supplies encompass a wide range of products targeted at various market segments including the Liberty, Noisetaker, FMA II DXX, Galaxy, and Galaxy DXX series.

In addition to being a retail presence with their Enermax brand power supplies, Enermax Technology Corporation appears to be one of the few real OEM providers of power supplies. Their power supplies however, have only rarely shown up under other labels including Grow Up Japan. For the most part Enermax appears to be a factory to retail presence with their own discreet lines of power supplies including today’s Galaxy DXX.

One Giant Leap........

Today we are going to be looking at Enermax's current top tier unit the revised Enermax Galaxy, now called the Enermax Galaxy DXX (EGX1000EWL-01). This power supply was originally released as the Enermax Galaxy 1000w but has recently been revised to include an 8pin PCI-E adapter to support newer video cards that draw up to 300w of power. In addition to the 8 pin PCI-Express adapter modification we will see if Enermax has changed anything "under the hood" on the Galaxy DXX.

The Galaxy DXX is an interesting power supply in the way of our evaluations as most power supplies we have reviewed to date have at least paid lip service to the various iterations of the ATX specifications. The Galaxy DXX however, is designed to more closely follow the EPS/SSI design guide (PDF). This results in some design features that customers should be aware of and will be covered in this review. Given that this power supply is not necessarily designed as we are accustomed to seeing from ATX12v power supplies, what group does Enermax expect this unit to target?

Design for the hard-core gamers that demand nothing less then perfect. The Galaxy DXX is equipped to handle dual 300w video cards thanks to the new PCI E 2.0 standard. Enough juice to handle the meanest dual quad core CPU system and quad graphics card on the market today.

Now that we know what Enermax expects from this power supply lets see what we have to look forward to when we purchase the Galaxy DXX in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
