Ultra X-Pro 750w
Ultra power supplies are synonymous with modular cabling systems. They also have had to weather their fair share of negative consumer feedback. Is Ultra doing anything different now with their new Ultra X-Pro 750w PSU? Well, yes they are.
Introduction
Ultra Products is a little bit different company than our first two evaluations (BFG and Corsair ) in that from their inception they have marketed a wide range of PC components. One of those product lines has been their power supply offerings that had great initial acceptance due in large parts to their good looks and their mass marketing of the modular concept. Today we are beginning our examination of a smattering of Ultra products encompassing varying facets of their X-Pro line of branded power supplies. The first X-Pro power supply we will be looking at is the Ultra X-Pro 750W (Part # ULT40029), which is a limited run power supply of only a few thousand units. For the X-Pro series of power supplies Ultra uses various OEM’s to fit whichever feature/performance set they are aiming at and today the X-Pro 750w we are looking at is provided by Seventeam.
Seventeam is a company that has flown under the consumer power supply radar for some time in the US, but recently a number of Seventeam based power supplies have begun to show up including the Ultra X-Pro 750w. Seventeam has been making power supplies for close to 20 years and a quick search of their website shows a large number of server oriented offerings.
Dressed to Impress
While the X-Pro 750W appears directed firmly at high end gaming systems one can’t deny the flare Ultra has become rather known for in their power supplies. Since Ultra began branding power supplies they have brought all their power supplies to market in a stunning visual package which drove much of their early adoption. The Ultra X-Pro 750w is no exception but at the same time it is certainly on the upper end of Ultra’s offerings and as such is geared towards more demanding systems as is clear from Ultra’s comments on the unit:
By combining the stability and durability of a server power supply with the sleek looks of a gaming power supply, Ultra once again addresses the needs of demanding, high end gaming systems. The X-Pro 750W can supply a continuous 50A from its 12V rail. The X-Pro 750W features a black titanium finish and cool black sleeved cables. The cable harness includes both four pin and two eight pin +12V connectors to support virtually any ATX12V or EPS12V platform. Four PCI-e connectors ensure support for even the most high end GPUs. When you use the Ultra X-Pro 750W, you'll never again have to wonder if you'll have enough power to get you through the next level, or next CPU or GPU upgrade.
Now that we know what Ultra expects from this power supply lets see what we have to look forward to when we purchase the X-Pro 750W in terms of documentation, accessories, cable count, rail layout, output characteristics, and general build quality.
