BFG Tech BFGR1000WPSU Power Supply

BFGTech did not disappoint when we asked them to participate in our inaugural PSU review program. Today we have their 1000 watt rated power supply that will be the first to run the [H] gauntlet.

Overview

As we see from the box we get a lot of information on the PSU which, I guess, explains the nonexistent documentation inside. Proudly displayed on the outside of the box is the typical marketing information one would expect on a high end power supply box but unlike some other boxes it is all rather subdued. Along the bottom though, we see probably one of BFGTech's biggest selling points with their power supplies, the Lifetime Warranty. Sadly though, there is no information specific to power supplies on the warranty page, so it is a bit unclear as to what the warranty covers, although you can call them 24/7. While some may argue the merit of a “lifetime warranty,” at the very least it means BFG thinks they have a product worth your hard earned money and that they won't be replacing it too many times. And from our BFGTech warranty experiences in the past, they do stand behind their products.

Also included with the PSU is the power cord, 4 mounting screws and some Velcro ties, nothing special but then again this is a power supply.

Now let’s break down that information on the box in a little easier to read format.

All in all, everything seems in order with the power outputs for a modern multi 12v power supply but the curious thing is without any documentation in the box and no indication on the box we don't know which 12v rail feeds which components. So the first order of business was to find out what 12v rail goes where. This information was provided by BFG upon request and is summarized in the table below.

As we can see this 12v arrangement is not typical and is in some ways, in our opinion, disadvantageous as it places far too much capacity on the 12v2 rail. Additionally, due to this arrangement an adapter was required in order to load 12v2 as ATX load testers are designed to load the Molex/SATA connectors and the ATX connector together as 12v1 not separately as this rail configuration provides.
