Intel Core 2 Duo & Extreme Power Consumption

Are you wondering if Intel’s new Core 2 Duo and Extreme are raging infernos like their predecessors? We show you what kind of wattage you can expect to draw so you know what PSU is in your future. And we throw in AMD's Energy Efficient 3800+ as well.

Introduction

If you are looking for Core 2 real-world performance numbers, please check our Intel Core 2 Gaming Performance article and our Intel Core 2 Music, Images, & Movie Performance article. For Core 2 Duo and Extreme power specifications, please see this article.

This section will be devoted to those of you wondering what kind of real-world power these new Core 2 processors will consume. Sure, you can read all the power specifications here, but sometimes those do not paint the full picture.

What we are going to do today is actually very simple. We have tested the very similar systems and measured just how much power it takes to run each system under different workloads. We do this by plugging our power supply into a device that sits between the power supply and the wall socket. This device will report to use the wattage that the system is using. We then take that data under different loads and simply report it to you here.
