New Microprocessor Architecture

You may have been hearing the name "Conroe" associated with this new Intel processor. Conroe is Intel's code name that was assigned to the project so many years ago. Today, bringing it to market we will see it officially referred to as Intel's "Core" architecture.

The desktop parts that we are interested in today carry the Core branding in their name to let consumers know that something is different. Gone are "Pentium" and its Netburst architecture.

Interestingly enough, Core really reflects Intel moving back to its roots. In laymen's terms, the Core is a Pentium III on steroids. Now this is a very simplistic explanation, but it is solid in its analogy. Core reflects the 20 stage pipelines of the past with much more advanced order execution of data. Core also reflects Intel's move to once again deliver more performance per watt of power used. So yes, these new Core CPUs will not turn your computer into the ovens of Pentium 4's past or take anywhere near as much power to drive.

Below is Intel's document entitled, "Inside Intel Core Microarchitecture." This is not a marketing document but rather a white paper that does a tremendous job of explaining the benefits and advances inside the Core processors.
