Grand Theft Auto 4 PC Uses SecuROM DRM

There is good news, bad news and odd news out today concerning the PC version of GTA IV. The bad news is that GTA IV will use SecureROM copy protection. The good news is that there is no limit to how many times it can be installed or how many PCs. The odd news is this quote:

The studio also noted, in an ominous tone, that "using a cracked copy of GTA IV PC will result in varying changes to the game experience," explaining that "these can range from comical to game-progress-halting changes."

Another Reason You Should Shop Online

It is pretty sad when a person is killed by crazed Black Friday shoppers. Just another reason to hit the [H]ot Deals forum and get in on all those BF deals from the comfort of your home.

"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too...I literally had to fight people off my back."

Could it be a Blue Christmas for Blu-ray?

A new study claims that only eight percent of holiday shoppers plan on going Blu-ray this year. The state of the economy, the total cost of entry (HDTV, player and movies) and perceived value is apparently what is keeping shoppers at bay.

One of the biggest problems? The cost. Even though the Blu-ray players have dropped in price, in order to actually get the benefit of Blu-ray you need to own an HDTV, which is still a very expensive investment (though Sharp has unveiled an HDTV with a Blu-ray recorder built in). Then when you consider that each Blu-ray movie costs about double the price of a DVD the numbers don't add up in Blu-ray's favor.

Carl Icahn Raises His Stake in Yahoo

According to the Associate Press, shares of Yahoo are up today after it was discovered that Carl Icahn bought an additional seven million shares in Yahoo. Does Icahn know something we don’t or is he just bargain shopping?

A filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission says the billionaire hedge-fund manager snapped up about $67 million worth of shares during the first three days of this week. That's on top of the original $1.5 billion worth of Yahoo shares Icahn had previously bought. Icahn has been among the loudest voices arguing for a new direction at Yahoo.

Rambus Wins Pretrial Patent Ruling

Rambus has won a pretrial ruling that basically says memory makers infringed on an element of a patent covering computer memory. The case is scheduled for trial in January.

The ruling means Whyte “already found one claim for Rambus that they won’t have to argue,” Jeff Schreiner, an analyst at San Diego-based Capstone Investments who doesn’t own Rambus shares, said today in a phone interview. “It starts to narrow the focus of the trial. You don’t get jurors lost in the complicated nature of the patents.”

Online Retailers Ramp Up Deals for Cyber Monday

Even with Black Friday shopping in full swing it isn't too early to start looking ahead to the great online deals that will be out there on Cyber Monday.

Online retailers are ramping up heavy-duty deals to turn skittish shoppers into buyers during the crucial Thanksgiving weekend and "Cyber Monday" — but even so, online sales are expected to be fairly flat after years of strong growth. Free shipping is virtually a given, and many are offering financing options such as no payments for 90 days and deals like $10 off purchases of $50 or more, along with traditional discounts on products.

DigiTimes, citing anonymous market sources, claims that Intel has completed its first round of recruitments for its 12-inch fab in China. The report also says that many of the employees have come from Hynix and SMIC.

The recruitment has drawn widespread attention in China's semiconductor industry as a large proportion of the hires appear to have come from the Beijing plant of Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) as well as Hynix Semiconductor's Wuxi plant, indicated the sources.
