About.com CEO To Step Down

After almost three years at the helm of About.com, and eight years at its parent company The New York Times, Chief Executive Scott Meyer announced he is leaving the company.

"After discussions with Martin, we've agreed that I'll be stepping down from my position as president & CEO of the About Group and leaving the Times Company," the memo says. "I am incredibly proud of all that we have accomplished together as a team at About. The About Group is in a very strong position. I will miss not being a part of About's future, but I'm confident that the Group's best days are ahead."

Yahoo Battling 7 Shareholder Suits

Things were bad enough for Yahoo long before Microsoft offered to buy the company but it seems things just keep getting worse by the day. Last week, Yahoo was facing one lawsuit from one of its biggest shareholders, this week that number is now seven. Yikes.

Yahoo's board believes Microsoft's offer, originally valued at $44.6 billion, is insufficient. Microsoft, though, has stood firm and is now preparing to overthrow Yahoo's 10-member board, which includes the company's co-founder and chief executive, Jerry Yang. Microsoft faces a March 14 deadline to nominate an alternate slate of directors.

PS3 Headtracking Using Camera Only

Sony is showing off headtracking using only the PlayStation Eye, no glasses needed, no Wii-mote. Pretty damn spiffy stuff if you ask me.

Unlike recent head-tracking video sensations, this clip shows a set-up that doesn’t require strapping any Wii hardware to your head. Nor does it require fancy glasses, like this one made by a programmer from Sony. No. This version requires just the official PS3 camera. And a person with a face and some mobility in their neck.

A LED That Can Go 80yrs On One Battery?

William Henry, an applications specialist at Ireland's Tyndall National Institute, theorized that new micro LEDs can last 80 years on a single battery charge. Imagine the modding applications.

The micro LED--which is significantly smaller than conventional light-emitting diodes--requires only a few billionths of an amp to operate. Thus, it can survive for quite a while on a limited power source. One of the researchers on the project had one running constantly for two-and-a-half years on his desk. Then someone damaged it while moving it around. One member of the group calculated that it could last 80 years (assuming no accidents) on the power stored in a coin-size battery.

Comcast Hiring People To Attend FCC Meetings

Get this, Comcast has admitted to hiring people off the street to fill the seats at yesterday’s FCC hearing to keep opponents out of the room. Comcast says the people hired were simply holding places for legit employees that wanted to attend but eyewitnesses (and cameramen) say different.

Consider this: One side in the debate actually went to the trouble of hiring people off the street to pack a Federal Communications Commission meeting yesterday—and effectively keep some of its opponents out of the room. Broadband giant Comcast—the subject of the F.C.C. hearing on network neutrality at the Harvard Law School, in Cambridge, Massachusetts—acknowledged that it did exactly that.

BFGTech ES-800 800W Power Supply

If you are a hardware enthusiast on the look out for a new PSU, make sure you check out our exclusive evaluation of the BFGTech ES-800 800W power supply. Trust us, you’ll be glad you did.

The BFG ES-800 is a huge departure from BFG power supplies of the past in almost every way possible. Not only does the ES-800 feature excellent voltage regulation, but it simply wipes the floor with most other power supplies when it comes to unique features that actually turn out to work as advertised. Among these features are the units "Frequency Conversion" which results in a unit that is exceptionally efficient at a huge range of loads starting as low as below 25% which then progresses on through to 100% load and the units no 5/3.3v minimum load requirement which allows the unit to be used as a 12v power supply all the way up to its rated 12v output of 65A.
