Firefox Gaining Ground Overseas

According to a recent report from the web survey company XiTi, Firefox is gaining ground in Europe and other parts of the world. Support for the open source browser is extremely high in Australia with almost one in three people using it. The report was based on the traffic figures of 112,018 websites around the world.

Firefox is available for three operating systems – Windows, Mac OS X and Linux – while new versions of Internet Explorer are available for Windows only. XiTi reported that the overall number of surfers using the Mac OS and Linux operating systems increased slightly during 2007, but Windows remained dominant with 95 per cent.

Company Introduces New Mobile Linux Platform

Another mobile Linux platform has just been announced. The recently renamed company says it is offering a complete suite of mobile Linux software and will help integrate different components from different vendors based on customers needs.

Formerly called Celunite, Azingo aims to differentiate itself from the crowd by offering phone makers an entire package, including kernel, middleware, applications, development tools and integration services.

Google 4Q Profit Misses Analyst Target

Google’s fourth quarter profits fell short of analyst expectations. The company’s fourth-quarter gain was the smallest in its fourteen quarters as a publicly held company.

In a more important measure to investors, Google retained $3.39 billion in revenue after paying commissions to its thousands of advertising partners across the Web. The net revenue missed analyst estimates by about $60 million, or just under 2 percent.

City Sues Man for Canceling Trash Service

I just had to post this story, not just because it is funny but because I could totally see one of you guys doing this.

Yesterday the Examiner ran a story on Eddie House, a guy that, through concern over the environment, managed to reduce his household waste to next to nothing through recycling, giving scraps to his dog, etc. Where it gets screwy is that the local refuse collection service has now sued Mr. House for no longer requiring their services.

Courts Side With TiVo Against EchoStar

The Washington, D.C., court of appeals upheld an earlier ruling that EchoStar Communications infringed on a DVR software patent owned by TiVo.

The court's decision "will have no effect on our current or future customers because EchoStar's engineers have developed and deployed next-generation DVR software to our customers' DVRs," Dish said in an official statement. The software update went out to customers "several months ago," according to Dish spokeswoman Kathie Gonzalez.

Torvalds: Linux Ready To Go Green

During Australia’s largest Linux conference, Linus Torvalds said that the infrastructure and tools are in place for Linux to become a green operating system.

In an interview at the linux.conf.au conference, the developer of the Linux kernel admitted that the operating system was lagging behind on power-management and energy-diagnosis tools. It is an area we were pretty weak in a few years ago and just building up the infrastructure took a long time, but now we are at a point where we have most of it done," Torvalds said.

FTC Settles With Spammer

The Federal Trade Commission says it has reached a settlement with one of those “free product” spammers. Under the terms of the agreement, the company can no longer use deceptive spam and they must also pay a $200,000 fine.

The settlement requires that Member Source Media clearly disclose in its ads and on its Web pages that consumers have to spend money or incur other obligations to qualify for a free product or service. The settlement also requires the company to provide a list of the obligations a consumer is likely to incur to qualify for their chosen item-- such as applying for credit cards or purchasing products.
