3Com Sold in $2.2 Billion Deal

3Com announced today that it will be acquired by private equity company Bain Capital and Huawei Technologies in a $2.2 billion cash deal.

"3Com has a strong competitive position, and we believe there are significant opportunities to grow by acquiring customers and introducing new products," Jonathan Zhu, a Bain Capital managing director based in Hong Kong, said in a statement.

Hynix Stops Supplying DRAM Chips To Spot Market

Hynix Semiconductor, desperately trying to fend off falling prices, has stopped selling DRAM on the spot market. There is no word from the company when selling may resume.

Analysts remained cautious about the consequence of Hynix's move. "The decision to stop selling on the spot market is aimed at protecting Hynix's prices on the contract market," said Lee Min-hee, an analyst at Dongbu Securities. Lee estimates that the spot market represents about 20 percent of the total DRAM market.

German Court Overturns eBay Shopper's Conviction

I think the news here isn’t the fact that this guy’s conviction was overturned but how he was convicted in the first place. How in the world can you get in trouble for purchasing something off eBay that you didn’t know was stolen?

A state court in the southwestern city of Karlsruhe ruled in favour of the 47-year-old software engineer because he had not known that a car navigation system he bought over eBay two years ago had been stolen, a spokesman for the court said.

Microsoft Blogger Accidentally Leaks Office Mobile Upgrade

How would you like to be this guy? Just trying to help out by letting the masses know about a cool new feature, only to find out you leaked an upcoming (unannounced) upgrade. Oops.

Jason Langridge, who works in Microsoft's Windows Mobile group in the U.K., wrote that Office Mobile 6.1 was available and he included a link to the download page. But a representative with Microsoft's external public relations firm said that the upgrade was put up on the site initially for internal testing and was accidentally made available to the public.

Intel 45nm Desktop Processors Coming in November

DigiTimes, citing sources at motherboard makers, says that Intel will release its first 45nm desktop processor on November 11th. The reports says that the first 45nm processor will be the 3GHz Core 2 Extreme QX9650 with a 1333MHz FSB and 12MB L2 cache.

The quad-core CPU will offer a frequency of 3.0GHz with 1333MHz FSB and 12MB L2 cache. As is typical for products in the Extreme series, pricing for the CPU will be set at US$999 in 1000-unit tray quantities. In an update to previous reports, three 45nm quad-core CPUs (Yorkfield) and another three 45nm dual-core CPUs (Wolfdale) for desktops will be launched in January next year, noted the sources.

Microsoft Extends Sales Availability of Windows XP

In an effort to respond to feedback the company is hearing from its customers and partners, Microsoft is extending availability of Windows XP editions among original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and retail channels for an additional five months to June 30, 2008. In addition, the company will continue to offer Windows XP Starter Edition in emerging markets where it is currently available for the rapidly growing class of hardware-constrained ultra-low cost PCs until June 30, 2010.

Minnesota Says Sprint Duped Customers

Sprint Nextel has been sued by the Minnesota Attorney General for allegedly extending customers' contracts without their informed consent. You know it’s never a good thing when the AG comes after you.

Swanson said she had received hundreds of complaints from Minnesota residents, including some who said they were threatened with a $200 cancellation fee for trying to get out of contracts they thought had expired.

Asustek Delays Eee PC Shipments

DigiTimes, citing information from channel distributors, claims that Asustek is expected to delay shipments of its Eee PCs until the end of next month. The article goes on to say that the major reason for the delayed launch is to add Linux-based software applications to the Eee PC line.

Asustek's Eee PC was originally expected to hit the market in the third week of September, noted the channel distributors. However, as the company expects to gain more power in the market and to expand its software applications, Asustek decided to postpone its schedule, said the distributors.

Radiohead Says Pay What You Want

The rumor mill is running wild today claiming that rock band Radiohead will offer its latest album (due October 10th) for whatever fans want to pay for it. You heard me right, the price is up to you. If you think this is the band flipping a “big finger” at the recording industry giants…you’d be right. The band reported said this to Time magazine:

Yes, it probably would give us some perverse pleasure to say 'f*ck you' to this decaying business model. I like the people at our record company, but the time is at hand when you have to ask why anyone needs one.
