AMD to Ship Industry’s First Native x86 Quad-Core Processors In August

Sunnyvale, Calif. -- June 29, 2007 --Continuing to lead the shift of mainstream enterprise computing to energy-efficient processors, AMD (NYSE:AMD) announced today that Quad-Core AMD Opteron™ processors, code-named “Barcelona,” are planned for shipment in both standard and low power versions at launch later this summer. This would be the first time AMD has made both standard and low power parts immediately available as part of a new processor launch.

New Era of Desktop Supercomputing?

The University of Maryland's A. James Clark School of Engineering has come up with what they believe will be the future of personal computing. The machine uses parallel processing and is said to be capable of running at 100 times our present speeds.

Parallel processing is an approach that allows the computer to perform many different tasks simultaneously, a sharp contrast to the serial approach employed by conventional desktop computers. The prototype developed by Uzi Vishkin and his Clark School colleagues uses a circuit board about the size of a license plate on which they have mounted 64 parallel processors.

EMI Inks Deal With Snocap

While most record companies are complaining about piracy, EMI has made yet another move in an attempt to sell more music. They have signed a deal with Snocap. The move allows for music stores to be added to websites, including social networks like MySpace profiles.

That means stores will appear on the web sites and MySpace pages of EMI artists. Far more interesting, though, is the fact that fans could place MyStores “widgets” on their own sites and MySpace pages, although Snocap would still control sales.

Dell Does More Ubuntu

We touched on a couple of the many moves that Dell made this week, however we did not discuss the fact that the Ubuntu availability also went up. Two more systems have been added to the lineup.

Since yesterday's launches, Direct2Dell readers like Concerned asked what we are doing to offer OS choice on the new products. From a Ubuntu perspective, we're now offering Ubuntu 7.04 to customers in the United States on the Inspiron 1420N notebook and the Inspiron 530N desktop. Both are available for order now at dell.com/open. Since these are new systems, it usually takes us a bit of time to ramp production. Because of that, we expect to ship these new systems by the middle of next month.

Internet Radio Royalties Stalemate

The proposed royalty increase was a hot topic yesterday as Congress is attempting to find the best solution for both sides.

But almost everyone in the room today appeared to agree on one thing: The ultimate resolution to the issue of how artists should be fairly paid for their contribution to commercial music, and how webcasters can equitably contribute to artists' compensation, was in the hands of precisely no one in attendance.

The File Sharing Graveyard

We have seen many sites housing or pointing to pirated content come and go over the years. The big question is why do they keep appearing after many of their predecessors were sued into oblivion? Besides the obvious demand for them, perhaps the companies they exploit have something to do with it as well?

"Ironically, if the studios changed their business model, that would put Napster's progeny out of business," Charnley said. "If they offer something that's legal, easy to use and affordable…these sites are useless."

Tech's 10 Most-Hyped Product Launches

Cnet has their take on the most-hyped products the tech sector has ever seen.

Prior to its launch, the Segway was known by its code name, "Ginger," and was expected to change the way people would get around--and even factor in to the way cities were designed. The product was hyped by people like Steve Jobs far ahead of its launch.

DOJ Committed to Fighting Piracy

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales reaffirmed that the Department of Justice is very committed to combating piracy and cybercrime. He is also attempting to make this an international effort.

The DOJ is also reaching out to overseas governments in hopes of encouraging them to crack down on intellectual-property crime. Last year, the DOJ provided training to over 3,000 foreign prosecutors, investigators and judges in more than 100 countries, he said. "IP theft is undeniably an international concern," he said.

Google Inks First U.S. Distribution Deal

Google has inked a deal with Ingram Micro to distribute its Google Search Appliance and Google Mini Appliance in the United States.

"As big as Google has gotten as a company, we have been overwhelmed by customer demand," Vaca said. "It's still a hardware based product that needs that to be presented to customers in their own particular environment. The only way to scale to meet demand and keep up with growth is through [the channel]," Vaca said.

Microsoft offers $500 Vista PC in India

MS is going to make an attempt to sell affordable Windows machines to students in India. Believe it or not, this move is stirring up a bit of controversy.

Microsoft, with chip-maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. and Indian PC maker Zenith Computers Ltd., said the $500 "IQ PC" runs the most basic version of the Windows Vista operating system and comes packed with the Office suite and programs to help students practice English and prepare for exams. The computer and related online content will be available in Bangalore and Pune on Sunday.
